R. I. S. – Die Sprache der Toten is a German television series broadcast by Sat.1 since 2007. The R. I. S. in the title is an acronym for Rechtsmedizinische Investigative Sonderkommission, referring to the fictional police investigation unit that is the focus of the series. The series, a crime drama, is a remake of an Italian television series entitled RIS Delitti Imperfetti.The first season ended on 10 June 2007. The second and final season with another 13 episodes began airing 15 November 2007.

Documentary filmmaker Paul Krewer follows his friend Thomas Ritter in the Peace Race, aiming to capture a winner’s story. When Ritter crashes and falls back, Krewer shifts focus to underdog Steve Baxter’s grit and teammate Falck’s unexpected lead. In a dramatic final stage, Ritter stages a comeback to win overall—and vows to uncover whether Falck’s last-minute mechanical failure was chance or conspiracy.

Julian is a psychiatric patient and wants to walk from Berlin to southern Germany. He believes that through the power of walking he can heal his friend's father, who has died of a heart condition. First, he runs into Ju, a young doctor, who he soon meets again by chance. She feels unhappy, searches for her heart and spontaneously joins the likeable dreamer on his way to Tuttlingen, where the sick man lives. In a tourist resort, they are joined by a frustrated wife and mother.

In England, Dr. Greg Fong invents a super steroid (SS160) which can cure virtually all illnesses and disorders (including impotence and idiocy) and generally makes someone superhuman. But his obsession with the super drug, begins making him mentally unbalanced. After the death of his co-worker, Fong returns to Hong Kong with his new wonder drug and begins working with old friend Dr. Mike Chow (Mark Cheng) Mike (who sells black market kidneys) then drugs and rapes his Fong's girlfriend Vivian who falls for him in return (!). Fong takes the affair as good reason to do a bit of human medical tests, and begins doing secret medical experiments on Dr. Chow, as well as a host of other patients, notably including policeman Chan Sum who begins turning superhuman.

The second part of the series sheds light on the Winters' marital problems. Tanja Winter moves out and enters into a relationship with a work colleague, Marie Winter moves into a shared flat in Berlin, and while Matthias Winter tries to save his marriage, he also meets someone.

Dr. Robert Siedler is an experienced forensic psychologist who is asked to prepare an expert opinion for the mentally disturbed ex-alcoholic Friedhelm Knecht, who has been in custody for a long time. According to his expert assessment, he is in favor of releasing the offender, whereupon Knecht is released from prison. Shortly afterwards, however, there is a murder in which the evidence points to Knecht as the perpetrator. The suspect goes on the run and when the case causes a stir in the press, Robert is quickly found to be the scapegoat and blamed for the murder. Robert himself is shocked: has he misjudged a case for the first time? Or was his expert opinion justified and is Knecht innocent?

Spring 1945: the Allies are outside Hamburg. In front of a movie theater, Lena Brücker meets Hermann Bremer, a marine assigned to the 'final battle on the home front'. After a night of love, Lena offers to hide the young man in her apartment during the last days of the war. This marks the beginning of a life-threatening love adventure for both of them, which they must keep secret from the rest of the world. While Lena blossoms over the next few weeks, Hermann suffers from his confinement and the constant fear of being discovered. Nevertheless, Lena will not tell her lover that the war is over so that she can spend as many days as possible with him on their shared 'mattress island' while everything changes outside.
